Campaigns spend most of their money on TV ads. Let’s just give them 100 minutes of TV time for free.
Politicians raise a lot of money, but why? and what do they buy with all of that cash? The answer is TV ads.
We’ve failed to regulate how much donors can give to political campaigns. Instead, I suggest a more effective way to eliminate corruption is to just give candidates what they spend the most on already: TV commercials.
Looking at this breakdown of the Romney/Obama campaigns, you can see that “Media Buys” is the single largest item in both campaigns. Media Buys means TV commercials in swing states.
If the Federal Government just gave a fixed amount of minutes of air time to the Dems and the GOP per campaign per state and then illegalized other TV commercials to support or attack either candidate, then we wouldn’t need to regulate how much money or from whom candidates raised money from.
Moreover, congress people would be happy to learn they wouldn’t have to spend so much of their time raising money any more, and they could actually do their jobs.
